Developing Skills in Reading: Foundation Phase to Key Stage 3 is a new course developed by the English Team at ESIS. This course aims to develop a shared understanding of teaching strategies for reading, so that teachers across Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 understand how pupils acquire initial reading skills, become fluent, expressive readers, develop their understanding and inferential skills and are able to read with a degree of critical literacy.
Delegates on the course so far have been very enthusiastic and responsive, as the following comments show:
• “Vast degree of knowledge and skills imparted. Excellent resources and ideas.”
• “Excellent presentation, absolutely piles of information. Beautifully presented folders – years worth of resources.”
• “I’m excited about trying out Critical Literacy ideas with my year 3 / 4 SEN pupils.”
• “This is an invaluable course for teachers. I have never been taught how to teach reading and I know that most teachers aren’t either.”
• “This course will have a tremendous influence on my practice. Reading will be held in high regard and will raise standards in literacy, which in turn will raise standards in all other subject areas.”
• “Some fantastic ideas which will be used my classroom practice, and ideas which will be passed on to staff members.”
