What was the focus for improvement?
• Improve awareness of word meaning and association.
• Improve standards of categorisation.
• Improve skills in listening to the views of others and respecting the contributions of other.

What did we do?
• Implemented the Target Practice strategy.
• Provided opportunities for small group interaction.
• Provided opportunities for groups to feedback and to discuss completed Target Practice boards.

What were the outcomes?
• Pupils enjoyed the strategy and engaged with key words and text associated with the various topics.
• It was a successful strategy to support pupils with the recall of information.
• The strategy supported the development of pupils’ classification skills.

What evidence have we collected to demonstrate improvements?
• Annotations of children’s comments
• Photographs of activity
• Conclusions at end of the task.

What have we learnt about teaching practice and pupils learning?
• Teachers need to take less of a leading role in certain activities and allow the children to develop their own leadership / organisational skills.
• Sufficient time is needed for children to explore and share their own ideas. Allowing sufficient time ensures that decisions are fairly made.
• Pupils’ thinking skills will improve if provided with opportunities and sufficient time to think.
• Most children will overcome their lack of confidence once they realise that activities are open and that answers are not necessarily ‘right’ or ‘wrong’.

What we aim to do next
• To use Target Practice strategy to explore other themes and areas of the curriculum.
• To further develop group work skills with the children to include developing their own roles of leadership and the diversity of agreed rules.
• To involve other age ranges.
• To involve the children in creating their own Target Practice examples.
