What was the focus for improvement?
The focus was to improve basic literacy skills and the key skill of communication.
By the end of the project pupils will be able to:
• Generate ideas individually and as part of a group
• Communicate more effectively – e.g. improve turn taking, listening, confidence to voice ideas etc
• Sort and group information as a team
• Present information in an organised, structured way
• Use information to inform writing, especially planning
• Improve the style, content and structure of their writing

What did we do?
• We shared ideas as a group using post-it notes for initial ideas with each child writing one idea on a theme at a time. The whiteboard was used for recording and grouping ideas.
• Mind mapping techniques - pupils organised into mixed ability groups comprising four member. The group was asked to further sort and group ideas.
• Story tracking – pupils organised into pairs of mixed ability to use ideas generated to track story ideas in a linear form using key words and the key question “what would happen next”.

What were the outcomes?
• Improvement was noted in pupil communication across all ability levels, especially in relation to speaking and listening.
• Pupil improvement was noted in writing. Previous examples of work were compared with the writing from this project and particular improvements were noted in style, especially the use of descriptive words and in the use of paragraphing.

What evidence have we collected to demonstrate improvements?
Pupils completed creative writing tasks. See attached files for examples.

What have we learnt about teaching practice and pupils learning?
• Careful consideration needs to be given to pupil grouping and teacher support
• Asking pupils to write on stickers helped sort and group information
• All pupils were able to use spider web maps and liked the security of discussing ideas in a group
• Mind maps helped pupils plan writing tasks more effectively
• The activity was used in an English exercise but skills could be transferred

What we aim to do next
• Continue development of creative writing across other year groups.
