What was the focus for improvement?
P4C aims to improve a very broad range of standards outcomes. Simply stated, the main standards are improvements in Critical and Creative Thinking. Improvements in these standards will impact positively on many other aspects of skill and subject standards. Many P4C outcomes are ephemeral. A record of group outcomes can be captured on video. This can illustrate the development of deeper thinking and deeper understanding.
What did we do?
The skill of the teacher in facilitating thinking through reflection and group interaction is the most important teacher skill. Pupil skills include the abilities to listen, reflect, explore and to link ideas
What were the outcomes?
P4C has been extremely successful in Lewis Girls School. There has been a clear improvement in pupils’ ability to engage in the P4C approach and to develop clearer thinking and deeper understanding.
What evidence have we collected to demonstrate improvements?
Many P4C outcomes are ephemeral. A record of group outcomes can be captured on video. This can illustrate the development of deeper thinking and deeper understanding.
What have we learnt about teaching practice and pupils learning?
This methodology has enabled pupils to engage in personalised learning. The importance of the teacher as a facilitator is paramount. P4C enables pupils to move to a deeper level learning. Open-ended questioning and the creation of a learning environment that provides the time, the structures and skilled facilitation can be rewarding for the teacher and the pupil.
What we aim to do next
We aim to develop P4C further across the curriculum.
