What was the focus for improvement?
To improve creative thinking skills by using descriptive writing to describe a dragon.
What did we do?
• Approaching St David’s Day and thinking about the Welsh dragon, to look at other dragons and to write about them
• Listened to stories about dragons
• Told the children that we had a visitor and introduce the dragon
• Let them touch and feel the dragon
• The diagram this time would be more informal, enabling the children to take the words and pictures down from the board so that they could use them for their writing
What were the outcomes?
• The children knew what they were doing and also a good bit about dragons - ideas came freely
What evidence have we collected to demonstrate improvements?
• Drawings and descriptions of the dragon were completed by pupils.
What have we learnt about teaching practice and pupils learning?
• The toy dragon inspired good ideas
• The diagram enabled children to feel ownership of the ideas and thus have more idea of how to use them
• The way the diagram was used took the children on because they were able to use their own words by taking them from the board
• The children were eager to put their ideas into use
• The resulting writing was excellent
What we aim to do next
• To use this approach again for further types of writing
