What was the focus for improvement?
• Improving standards of writing across whole school
• Integrating working with others into writing tasks
What did we do?
• Attended ESIS organised training on Big Writing
• Staff attended T2L training with ESIS on working with others
• Made it a key focus for our school improvement plan
• Purchased classroom guide books
• Purchased prepared resources
• Similar displays in each room, but progressive in expectation
• Candles and music purchased for each room
• Timetabled writing sessions
• Portfolio for each class set up
• Used Performance Management process to monitor standards and target improvement
• Share our own practice in-house
• Share practice with other clusters/schools
• Set a baseline and assessed each term an targeted improvements for individuals
What were the outcomes?
• Children very quickly became excited about writing
• Children enjoyed sharing their ideas
• Less pressured when working together
• Standards have risen
• Boys have caught up with girls

• Portfolios of writing from each class showing baseline through to current work
• Class books
• End of year Teacher assessment data
• Monitoring data
What have we learnt about teaching practice and pupils learning?
• Allowing the children to share experience, widens experience for all
• Sharing ideas is vital for children and teachers
• Pupils learn best when they see learning as fun and unpressured
• Language needs to be provided from an adult to extend and develop
• Children enjoy a challenge and thrive when they own their own learning
• Children need to know their next step in order to achieve it!
• An initiate must fit the school and not a school fitting an initiative
What we aim to do next
• Continue our current work for a further year
• Train new staff
• Share and learn from other networks following Big Writing
• Focus on our TALK project to further develop oracy work
