What was the focus for improvement?
• Combing assessment for learning strategies with homework - developing pupils' learning logs
What did we do?
We decided to try to combine some of our assessment for learning strategies with our homework, the result being…
• children would reflect on what they had learned during the week
• how they had learned this
• decide how they would like to extend their learning further for their homework
• what methods they could use to do this
What were the outcomes?
• Pupils feel empowered as they would be able to 'choose their homework’
• Pupils react more positively to the concept of homework
• As the work was the pupils’ choice they would feel motivated and consequently put more time and effort into their work
• Pupils could further develop their assessment for learning strategies and put themselves on the path to becoming lifelong learners
What evidence have we collected to demonstrate improvements?
• Learning logs - examples of pupils' work attached
What have we learnt about teaching practice and pupils learning?
• Pupils were very positive towards their ‘Learning Logs’ as they became more familiar with the process of completing them
• They liked the fact that they were able to choose what they wanted to learn
• They liked to share their work with groups and the rest of the class
• They liked using ICT resources for purposes of research and presenting of their work
• 96% of pupils stated that they enjoyed completing Learning Log activities more than traditional reinforcement style homework
• 4% of pupils stated that they would prefer to complete traditional reinforcement style homework
• These pupils stated that they didn't like this kind of homework ‘because it takes too long’
• Some of these comments were made by pupils on our ‘gifted and talented register’
What we aim to do next
• To maintain ‘high profile status’ of Learning Logs within the classroom
• To ensure that pupils continue to receive good quality feedback about their work
• To improve the quality of pupil reflection about ‘what’ and ‘how’ they have learned
• To encourage pupils to highlight exactly what they want to learn and how they can do it
