What was the focus for improvement?
• To develop pupils’ critical thinking skills and engagement with text through the implementation of the Fortune Line strategy.
• To improve standards of sequencing / classification.
• To improve awareness of the impact of experience.
What did we do?
• Shared the story of “The Rainbow Fish” with pupils.
• Discussed the feelings of the characters as events happened during the story.
• Introduced and explained the Fortune Line strategy to pupils.
• Ensured opportunities for small group interaction and for pupils to complete a fortune line for one character in the story.
• Provided opportunities for groups to feedback and discuss completed Fortune Lines.
What were the outcomes?
• Pupils engaged with the text of the story at a deeper level.
• The strategy supported the development of pupils’ sequencing and classification skills.
What evidence have we collected to demonstrate improvements?
• Completed Fortune Lines
• Annotations of children’s comments
• Photographs of activity
What have we learnt about teaching practice and pupils learning?
• The Future Line strategy can be used as a most effective tool to develop the thinking skills of children of varying ability.
• The children must be given opportunities to develop skills in listening to the opinions of others and to learn to respect these.
• If children are given time and opportunity to think carefully and to develop their own ideas then their thinking skills will develop.
• Most children will overcome their lack of confidence when involved in thinking tasks once aware that there are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers and that their views are valued.
• Teachers need to adopt a more peripheral role during thinking skills activities in order to encourage pupils to be more independent in their thinking.
What we aim to do next
• To use the Fortune Line strategy to explore the feelings of other characters from the Rainbow Fish story e.g. little blue fish.
• To develop further group work skills with the children e.g. develop their own roles of leadership and rules for group work.
• To use the Fortune Line strategy with pupils of other age ranges.
