What was the focus for improvement?
• To develop pupils’ understanding of emotions in stories
• To develop pupils’ ability to plot and justify opinions and feelings
What did we do?
• Implemented the fortune line strategy across the age range (from year 1 to year 6) and in a variety of curricular subjects.
What were the outcomes?
• Pupils demonstrated an improved understanding of text.
• Pupils were more independent in their learning.
• The use of fortune lines supported the development of pupils’ sequencing and classification skills.
• Fortune lines can be used effectively as a tool for self and peer assessment.
What evidence have we collected to demonstrate improvements?
• Examples of children’s work
• Photographs
• Discussion with pupils
What have we learnt about teaching practice and pupils learning?
• Teachers need to stand back and let children take responsibility for their own learning.
• There is a need to develop new approaches for facilitating learning rather than directly teaching.
• Pupils were able to take total responsibility for their learning and work independently. It gave them a more in depth understanding about their own work and that of characters in stories.
What we aim to do next
• Develop further examples of fortune lines activities across the curriculum.
• In language we intend to extend the fortune line axis to include more in depth feelings and emotions (excited, nervous, worried, etc).
• Implement the fortune line strategy to aid and support self and peer assessment across the curriculum and throughout the school.
