This is the outcome of small-scale, classroom-based action research conducted by a geography teacher who was successful in attaining Master's level accreditation through a joint ESIS/UWIC initiative on Developing Thinking Skills.
The title of Nicky Matthews' research was:
The impact of De Bono’s Six Hat Thinking Strategy on pupils’ ability to achieve higher order thinking skills within Key Stage 3 geography lessons.
Focus:
This is a small scale action research project designed to look at the impact of De Bono’s (2000) Six Hat Thinking strategy on higher order thinking in Key Stage 3 geography lessons. It took place in a large, single gender, South Wales Valley School. The results demonstrated that thinking is a learned activity and that the structured approach initiated by De Bono (2000) does have a positive impact upon pupils’ ability to access the higher order thinking skills of creating and evaluating as outlined by Bloom (1956). The results also highlighted the positive benefits of this strategy on behaviour within the classroom. The Six Hat Thinking strategy is multi-faceted in the skills that it encompasses and bearing in mind that teaching of thinking skills aims to create a 21st century generation that are self sufficient in problem solving and team work the use of this strategy could be the way forward if one strategy is to be adopted.
