Good Practice Database >> Using Mindmaps to Write Fairytakes

LACaerphilly School NameYnysddu Primary School

What was the focus for improvement?
To improve creative thinking skills.

What did we do?
• We made the Home Corner into Fairytale Cottage
• We discussed the many and varied fairytales we had read
• We discussed what is needed in a fairy story
• We discussed what we needed in order to write our own
• We mapped our thoughts on a spider diagram

What were the outcomes?
Enthusiasm from the children and high quality creative writing.

What evidence have we collected to demonstrate improvements?
Creative writing from children

What have we learnt about teaching practice and pupils learning?
• The planning helped the children understand what they were doing and as a result ideas came freely
• The children had good ideas about what a fairy story should contain
• The diagram enabled children to feel ownership of the ideas and thus have more idea of how to use them
• The children were eager to put their ideas into use
• The resulting writing was excellent

What we aim to do next
To use this approach again for further types of writing
